This question is a bit controversial but it has to be asked. Do Plankers dislike Helicopter Pilots and do Helicopter Pilots dislike Plankers? If so Why?

Please quote your experiences but at all costs lets keep it civil.

But but but... someone had to say it!...lol . OK here goes. Never never never will I forget SWAN HILL AEROMODLERS CLUB https://sites.google.com/a/shmac.com.au/www/

Check out their website, its awesome!

Well anyway we were invited to go up to swan hill to fly and have fun. When we got there one day early with anticipation to spend the whole weekend up there. We were told - verbatim - that there was heaps of places we can fly, facilities and generators we could use to charge our batteries.

We arrived the night before the fun flight and set up camp. Crash heligod arrived before we did and trashed @3dmick helicopter. it was great sitting around the fire and yapping away. The next morning the action started. Guess what! no place to charge our packs! what ta?. Okay that's accepted. Being the morning, we thought we would get a few flights in early so wandered off to an obscure part of the airfield and started flying. Within 15 mins we were told we cant fly there so we moved to another spot. We were promptly told the same thing. Hmmm. So we asked - where can we fly? We were told we could fly at the back side of the field behind the shed! An area probably no longer than 30 meters - with the sun glaring in our eyes, trees to the right and we were not allowed to venture to the left because it will affect the planes.

Now there were pretty close to as many planes as there were helicopters and we had this tiny tiny area. The plankers had this HUGE area, no allowances made for choppers whatsoever. At this stage I thought that this was a joke and wanted to go home. Most heli pilots were singled out from the crowd. And while walking to amenities or through groups, we were often the brunt of jokes that were not really bad, but not tasteful either.. Normally I would not care but it was just too obvious. Now I appreciate planks and think they are great as well. I think I would prefer helicopters after flying helis at a reasonably accomplished level but I can still appreciate them regardless.

So why do plankers hate helicopter guys? Or should I not generalise and say why do the swan hill plankers hate helicopter guys? Please give me some insight!

I personally do not dislike plankers. My club is primarily an airplane club, and I was the very first helicopter...as well as female pilot to join the club. In my experience with flying with airplane pilots, they are very polite and courteous. I have had only one invade my airspace while I was flying, and he made a point to walk over to me after we had both landed....and apologize for it. There have been one or two instances where I was a guest at a different club, and some of the airplane guys were a little apprehensive toward me. I don`t believe it was because they disliked me personally, because they quickly warmed up to me after watching me fly.

I don't think there's any personal dislike. I fly at two places with planes. The first time I was at the first place I was offered the chance to try a plane which I did. I now own a 3D foamie which I fly on occasion. Everybodyhere is cool and nice and everybody mingles. At the second place the plane guys stick to themselves, as do we, and they don't really respect the whole take turns concept. It's not uncommon for a plane to fly above or below you. There's plenty of room at the field but they use it all when they're in the air.

Our club is pretty cool when it comes to helis, although planks have priority. It's cool, as long as you know. I called them a bunch of old plankers one day, and they all mis-heard me, boy that took some explaining.

The old plakers suck. They see rc as scratch build IC planes that have to be flown in circles and any change is detrimental to the hobby. They believe 3D flying is unrealistic and should not be performed. I think you just ran into a bunch of old angry plankers that only fly around in circles.

I don't think they suck, everyone to their own, they don't tell me how to fly and I don't tell them

75% of clubs in sydney are ran by old plankers they hate 3d planes and helis.

My club HMAS is the total opposite all the boys love watching the 3d pilots cheat @Crash Heligod.

I think alot of the problem is the old boys cant comprehend how to fly 3d or they just wont get with the times

You know, maybe its more of a club culture thing. Some clubs will be fine with helis and planks - other clubs form distinct groups ie helis vs planks circles. Friendly banter is ok but at swan hill - that year - it was something else. But i want to re-iterate that i don't consider all plankers fit that mold. I usually treat anyone with respect first and go from there regardless of what they do. But I am just trying to figure out what is the reason for the dislike? is it because helicopters take up the airspace?

Yeah you know thats exactly what they were doing @Min flying around in circles relatively high! no 3d anywhere!

So I personally think its our responsibility as Heliguys and heli/planker guys not to show that same kind of distain to plankers, otherwise we are the same. Unless they disrespect us out right then we can summon Crash Heligod on the field where they fly! Crash heligod dont care if its a plank or heli!

I think they don't like us because we can't really fly in the same airspace together, the movement of a heli is completely random (Brownian flight!), so they can't fly when we are up. I personally think it's kind of selfish. I just go to the club either early or later. If we are there together, us heli guys (and really there is only @Andrew R and myself, get relegated to a small area. They look after this area though, and gave us a shelter, and three tables, keep it mowed etc etc, so I'm not complaining. It was a good area for them when some of them were learning to hover - they never really continued on. I still really dig our club, it's a cool place and the members are cool as well. I don't mind playing by their rules.

I really think this is the main point, although loud blade farts do distract them. BTW, what blades fart the loudest?

I also got on the club committee, to make sure we (heli pilots) don't get screwed. No use complaining about them (plankers), you have to be a bit proactive guys
